Compost - Follow Up
Pet Waste
Pet Waste and Compost is a touchy subject. It is rare that is can be composted, so we are often looking for alternative methods of disposal.
Hint: Sometimes the landfill really is the best choice!
- Cat Waste is NEVER compostable. Please bag the litter and waste and dispose of in your garbage. But, the waste! I know, but it just is. Landfill is the greenest choice. (Seriously, I am so guilty from this! Learn from my mistake lol. Let your trees live!!)
- DO NOT FLUSH PET WASTE - the water processing plant will ultimately have to remove the waste from the water and send it to the landfill anyway, so please save it from a detour. Also, cat waste has serious toxins that can contaminate the water!
I know that it seems like the easy way sometimes, but it is really not.
- Dog Waste can be composted in your backyard pile AS LONG AS the final compost will not be used for growing edibles- so no veggies, fruits, or herbs gardens. But yes, dog doo can be composted.
You can also have a separate pile just for dog waste if it is a little to icky for you.
You can also explore BOKASHI COMPOSTING, which is a cool way to compost dog doo quickly. 🤎
Regarding those systems to compost it in your yard- please read the reviews of each one you are considering. Most have low success rates, and the results are frustrating to deal with... which can deter future composting! Have questions about composting? Email us at thegreenassistant@gmail.com and we will explore it with you.
Share Your Love of Green
Are you composting at your home? Considering it?

Your neighbors may want to share energy about it, and that is when it gets even more rewarding and fun. This is community!
Aluminum Can Recycling - Follow Up
If you do not have recycling services at your home or business but DO want to recycle aluminum cans, we've got you! Empty them and gather the goods, then you can drop them off to the 2 collection points for the Firefighters' Burned Children Fund:
- West Buncombe Fire Department at 549 Old Home Road, Asheville 28806
- Weaverville FD at 3 Monticello Road, Weaverville, 28787 (exit 18 off future I-26)
They have a big metal trailer where you can empty the bags of cans (no, they don't want bags either!) and those get recycled to raise money for their fund.
So, you can even host a stealth "Party with a Purpose" and use aluminum cans (and aluminum cups if you must use single use cups) and recycle them for the community!
Sanctions Kill
The US uses sanctions to pressure leaders in other countries to comply with our rules. Unfortunately, this impacts the most marginalized people in the country the most! And many leaders don't care how it is impacting their people, so we hurt the people who are JUST LIKE US the most. 😭 Learn more about the true impacts of US sanctions at SanctionsKill.org.
War. What is it good for? Making Money.
I can't deal with war right now. So here are a couple of resources that have helped me understand more of what is happening in Ukraine and Russia right now.

Gas Pipeline in Europe
NOREASTER 2: The gas pipeline from Russia to Germany that would essentially undercut our outrageous prices for fracked gas that we currently sell to Germany. I mentioned it, so I want to share some information about it. Here is a good interview about it. German Parliamentarian: ‘Peace Can Only Exist with Russia, Not Against Russia’ Start here and the dig further if you are interested.
+ To consider: can we reduce the amount of fracking we need to do if we stop selling so much oil overseas? Can we stop building leaky, destructive pipelines in our own country if we don't need to sell overseas? Also, who are we to decide what other countries get to do with their natural resources?
